To Feel helplessness is a learned behavior. We are not born with it. Feeling helpless is also the basis of depression.
Martin Seligman and Steve Maier are two researchers (University of Pennsylvania) who proved the above fact. They experimented on animals and perhaps at that time animal activists were not too vocal.
They took two dogs, put them in separate cages and gave them low electric shocks. Switch to stop the current was inside only one dog’s cage. He could stop it any time. Other dog was just helpless.
After suffering from shocks for some time these dogs were put in other cages which were divided by a partition, jumping over which they could end their suffering.
Researchers were astounded to see that the dog that was helpless never jumped to safety, whereas the other dog that had the option to end the suffering always jumped to safety. This experiment was repeated with several dogs with the same results.
If you are stuck somewhere in life, you and only you have the power to end your suffering. Take the reigns of your life in your own hands and do something to #FeelHearty.
